Huntingdonshire District Council extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of former councillor Derek Giles following the sad news of his death.
Derek, who was a councillor for 27 years before standing down in May 2022, served eight terms of office as Ward Councillor for the former St Neots Eaton Socon Ward and latterly the St Neots Eatons Ward. He was first elected to the Council in 1991 and served until 2022, with the exception of the period 2008 to 2012.
In July, Derek was made an honorary alderman in recognition of his exceptional service to the District Council.
Cllr Sarah Conboy, Executive Leader of Huntingdonshire District Council, said: "Few people have given greater service to their local community than Derek who was a councillor for 27 years.
"It was a privilege to see Derek become an honorary alderman earlier this year – the highest honour the District Council can bestow - and was a fitting tribute for his hard work and dedication.
"On behalf of all at Huntingdonshire District Council, we would like to express our deepest sympathy and condolences to Derek's family and to all those fortunate enough to have met him. He will be missed."
