Licensing

Licence summary

You need a licence from us to show, demonstrate or perform a public hypnosis act in the district.

Applications must be made at least 28 days before the planned performance. We will respond within two weeks, or less if you have previously performed in the same venue.

What happens if I don't apply for a licence?

You could be fined up to £1,000 if you perform a hypnosis act without a licence or break any conditions of the licence.

Are there any restrictions?

You may be refused a licence if you have ever been:

  • refused or had a consent for hypnotism withdrawn by any licensing authority
  • barred from the Federation of Ethical Stage Hypnotists, the European Guild of Professional Stage Hypnotists or any similar body

  • convicted of an offence under the Hypnotism Act 1952, or

  • convicted of an offence involving the breach of a condition regulating or prohibiting a performance of hypnotism.

How do I apply?

Complete the application form online. You will also need to provide a copy of your public liability insurance certificate.

Fees

There is no charge for stage hypnotism applications.

Does tacit consent apply?

Yes. This means that you can act as though your application has been granted if you have not heard from us within 42 days of us receiving your application.

Consumer complaint

We advise that consumer complaints are first made to the trader, preferably in the form of a letter (with proof of delivery). If that does not work, further advice is available from Citizens Advice.
