A brand new charity has been formed to manage the newly built community facility and sports pitch on the papermill site at Samuel Jones Crescent. The charity, called The Community Hub – Little Paxton, was formed on 3 November at a meeting of local groups and residents and is ready for community involvement and business immediately.

Four key local groups have worked with individual residents and all were instrumental in forming the charity into its present shape. They are:

  • Little Paxton Colts football club, who started off this process
  • Little Miracles, supporting families of children with additional needs
  • Switch Now, training adults with additional educational needs and
  • the Kingfisher Church.

All these groups are working with staff from Huntingdonshire District Council, who are responsible for the delivery of the facility.

New chairperson, Paul Cook, said: "We all hope that 'The Hub' will be a fantastic new venture which will provide opportunity for everyone in the village. Little Paxton Colts have girls and boys, aged from 7 to 17, playing in 13 teams and the new pitch and facility means we can now become a full FA Community Charter Standard Club."

Cllr Steve Criswell, Executive Councillor for Community Resilience, congratulated the new charity and said: "This is a great example of local people stepping up to the challenges of modern life. Trustees are looking at every aspect of this facility to make sure it meets their needs. Activities including sports, crafts, education, employment training and children’s clubs will be just walking distance from residents. It should fill any gaps in existing provision and really bring the village together."

Cllr Laurence Swain, ward councillor for Little Paxton added his support, saying: "The new charity and community building are excellent additions to the already thriving local community in Little Paxton. I hope that they will work alongside existing groups to provide residents with an even greater range of facilities and services."

There is lots to do in the coming months to raise funds to equip the new building so that it is fit for purpose to provide an additional and much needed resource in Little Paxton. Business sponsorship will be sought and donations will be also be welcome.

Building work will be complete by the middle of January and occupation of the building will be possible in the months that follow. We are also seeking volunteers to help with the next stage, which is to research and provide feedback on specific items of the fit-out. If you are willing, able and have a ‘can do’ attitude, please get in touch to offer your time to this exciting local community project.
