More families are being helped get onto the housing ladder in St Ives through shared ownership properties provided by Cross Keys Homes. The part‐buy, part‐rent homes are located on the former St Ives golf course and form part of a larger development to provide 64 affordable homes.

Claire and Michael Antony (pictured above) recently moved into their new shared ownership home. Mrs Antony said: “We’d been planning and saving to buy our own home for years but it was still proving really hard to find a home that we could get a mortgage on. Shared ownership was our only chance of getting a home.

“We are so happy that we’ve found a house that we can raise our family in and the monthly costs are much, much less than they were when we were renting. It feels like home already.”

The family received a visit from Cross Keys Homes’ Chief Executive, Claire Higgins, and Councillor Ryan Fuller, Executive Councillor for Housing and Planning at Huntingdonshire District Council, to hear first‐hand the difference the new affordable homes are making to local people.

Working with Barratt Homes, by summer 2018, Cross Keys Homes will have introduced 45 affordable rent and 19 shared ownership homes to the area.

Cross Keys Homes’ Chief Executive, Claire Higgins, said: “We are committed to helping Huntingdonshire District Council continue to provide much needed new affordable homes for the area. We truly believe that they are essential to making sure that every family can find somewhere safe and comfortable to live.

“We’re also working on new strategic developments across the county including sites at Godmanchester and Alconbury where we will provide hundreds of affordable rented and shared ownership homes over the coming years.

“We have strong long‐term funding arrangements in place and are building a large development pipeline in Huntingdonshire. We very much look forward to delivering these to assist the supply of affordable homes in the district.”

Councillor Ryan Fuller, Executive Councillor for Housing and Planning, said: “The District Council continues to place great importance on affordable housing, not least because of continuing high house prices which means that buying a home of your own is not within the reach of all."

“We have been working closely with Cross Keys Homes on a number of new developments, and shared ownership can be a good option for people who want to own their own home but are not able to move straight to full ownership. However, shared ownership is just one option. There continues to be a higher need for housing for rent and most of the affordable housing being provided on this development will be for rent. I am very pleased therefore to see the progress being made here in St Ives and look forward to more homes being completed."

“Our drive to enable more affordable housing is ultimately about the local people we are helping into a secure home, and it is always pleasing to see things coming to fruition and to meet those that are actually benefiting. I’m pleased to have been invited to meet Claire and Michael, and I'm sure they are going to be very happy in their new home.”
