Street Furniture ranges from practical installations such as bins and seats through to environmental enhancements such as decorative street lighting and planted troughs.
These items can be found throughout the district, in streets, on pavements, in town centres and parks. The range of assets and locations also means a number of different bodies could be responsible for the item's maintenance.
Who is responsible?
The upkeep and maintenance of the public highway is the responsibility of the County Council. However, in street furniture terms, generally only the street lighting is the responsibility of the County Council, and can usually be identified by a County Council Asset tag. Issues with street lighting should be reported to the County Council - see link on the right.
In the larger town centre areas, bins seats, planters and so forth are usually the District Council's assets. In the smaller towns and villages, seats, bins, hanging baskets and so on may be the Town or Parish council's responsibility.
There are thousands of pieces of street furniture within the District and there are, of course, exceptions to every rule. This advice is intended as a guide only, if you are in any doubt over who to contact, please call us and we will help wherever possible.
Reporting a Problem
If you do spot a problem with a piece of street furniture (or other Council asset), please report it to us. As much information as you can give us about location and a description of the item would be very helpful.
Where damage is causing the item to be dangerous, we aim to have a crew out to 'make safe' the asset as soon as practical. A full repair or replacement could take around two weeks to complete.
