Pavement Maintenance

Highway Authority Standards

Cambridgeshire County Council set policy on maintenance standards in the annual edition of ‘Network Management Plan’ and the policy for potholing is as follows: -

  • Dangerous conditions in footways should be dealt with immediately to achieve safe conditions with the minimum of maintenance.
  • Potholes are considered dangerous when they are vertically sided, more than 20mm deep and have an area of 0.1 sq. m in any footway, cycleway and marked cycle lane and are sufficiently far from the edge of the footway to be surrounded by bituminous material.
  • Other conditions which occur should be judged in accordance with the good practice and specification requirements, and dealt with accordingly.
  • Dangerous potholes complying with the dimensions specified are to be repaired within 24 hours.
  • On footways, dangerously rocking slabs and trips over 20mm high should be repaired within 24 hours of report.
