Huntingdonshire District Council considers cycling to be a very important mode of transport as we aim to widen travel choices across our District. 

This is being undertaken through joint work with other bodies and organisations and the Council is committed to the aim of encouraging more people to cycle.

News

A Cycling and Walking map is now available for the Huntingdon & Godmanchester area. This is an interim publication and we hope in time to develop this in further detail showing links to nearby villages and other related information. Likewise, we aim to deliver similar maps for the other Market Towns. See the Linked Documents box.

Huntingdonshire is a paradise for walkers and cyclists just awaiting discovery. There are miles of waymarked public footpaths and bridleways criss-crossing through open countryside and nature reserves. People currently enjoy cycling around the miles of mainly traffic-free tracks skirting Grafham Water and the wider countryside is easily explored on two wheels. We have developed a range of 14 cycle routes around the scenic villages and countryside of Huntingdonshire and these are available for download by going to the Visit Huntingdonshire Cycle Routes link in the External Links box.

Other Initiatives

Together with the development of our own Cycling Strategy and an extensive range of schemes as part of our Market Town Transport strategies, a large number of schemes have been completed in the recent years, including;

• The provision of a segregated walking and cycling route between Huntingdon and Brampton including links to Hinchingbrooke School, Police Headquarters, Hinchingbrooke Hospital with onward links to Hinchingbrooke Business Park and the Country Park.
• Improvement to the shared pedestrian/cycle route between The Avenue, Godmanchester and Huntingdon Town Bridge 
• The provision of a new cycle track between Sallowbush Road and Kings Ripton Road, Huntingdon including a pedestrian/cyclist friendly controlled crossing on Kings Ripton Road for access to the Towerfield complex
• The provision of an off-road pedestrian/cycle route between Eaton Socon and St. Neots Town centre with links to Riverside Park and Coneygere
• The provision of a segregated pedestrian and cycle route between Tesco, Eynesbury and St. Neots Railway station via Barford Road and Cromwell Road
• The completion during 2004 of a new segregated pedestrian and cycle at Oxmoor, Huntingdon between Sallowbush Road at Sapley Square and Ambury Road via Oxmoor Lane
• The completion of a pedestrian link at Views Common between Stukeley Meadows and Hinchingbrooke Hospital (Phase 1)
• The completion of a pedestrian link between Stukeley Meadows to Hinchingbrooke Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Park Road across Views Common, Huntingdon, working with the Freeman of Huntingdon (Phase 2)
• As part of the St. Neots Transport strategy, a new pedestrian and cycletrack across Island Common to link with Little Paxton
• The provision of an improved cycling/walking route between The Priory Centre and the Railway Station in St. Neots
• St. Peter's Road, Huntingdon (Ermine Street to Towerfields)

Schemes in development at the present time include;

• The completion of the Ambury Road to Huntingdon Town Centre route
• Yaxley Phase 1
• Eynesbury to Eaton Socon cycle/footbridge (CCC scheme with HDC partner funding)

Cycle Parking facilities

We are now providing safe, secure cycle parking across the district and sites have been completed within St. Neots, St. Ives and Huntingdon town centres at the following locations. All are signed and covered by CCTV and adjacent lighting;

• St. Neots - Waitrose car park (covered), Tebbutts Road car park (covered) and Brook Street. Sites in St. Neots were part funded with the Town Council.
• St. Ives - Cattle Market car park (adjacent to the bus station - covered), Globe Place car park (covered) and Crown Place
• Huntingdon - Adjacent to Sainsbury's (from November 2007), Princes Street (adjacent to Waitrose - covered), Trinity Place and St. Germain Street Minor car parks (covered), High Street (rear of Curry's - covered) and George Street opposite 'The George Hotel'
• Ramsey - Mews Court Car Park (covered) and New Road/Great Whyte near public toilets (uncovered)

Improved cycling parking at Huntingdon and St Neots Railway Stations is also available.
