Congratulations to the children and staff of The Ramsey Nursery who won the best sandwich in Ramsey heat of the Hunt for the Best Sandwich in Huntingdonshire competition. The Ramsey Nursery won with their creative and tasty sandwich, ‘The Children’s Choice’.

The four shortlisted were Garrick Fox, Tegan Fox, Susan Normington and the children of the Ramsey Nursery.  The Bow Window Restaurant provided the use of its kitchens and on Friday 15 August all four finalists arrived to make their sandwiches. After a flurry of activity, the finished sandwiches were presented to the judges.

Judges, Robert Hartley, owner of The Bow Window Restaurant, Val Lenton, Catering Manager of Abbey College, Tina Stonebridge, Practice Sister at the Rainbow Surgery, and Helen Taylor who holds a diploma in professional cooking, had the difficult task of judging the recipes for their healthy content and use of locally sourced ingredients and judging the four shortlisted sandwiches for taste and presentation.

Robert Hartley said; “All four sandwiches were superb. They were imaginative, delicious and made from healthy, local ingredients.  It was a very difficult choice to make”.

However, a winner had to be chosen, and the decision went to the children of The Ramsey Nursery who had not only created an excellent sandwich of ham, chutney and salad, but had actually grown the salad leaves and made most of the other ingredients themselves, including the bread, butter and mayonnaise!

Vera Woolmer, Ramsey Town Centre Manager said; “Well done to all those who submitted their amazing recipes and congratulations also to the four who were shortlisted to go on to the second round and make their sandwich for the judging panel”.

The children will make their sandwich again when they represent Ramsey in the third and final round at 2.30pm on Saturday 27 September at Saxongate, Huntingdon.  They will go head to head with the winners from Huntingdon and St. Ives and all are welcome to watch the eager finalists work their magic.

Prize-giving will take place during the Food Fest 2008 event on Sunday 28 September and all four finalist recipes will be on the menu!

The Huntingdonshire Food and Drink Festival is taking place across the district from Thursday 25 to Monday 29 September.  For more details on the events taking place during the five day festival or to download a food and drink festival calendar of events leaflet visit Food and Drink Festival page using the link on the right.
