Congratulations to the children and staff of The Hinchingbrooke Nursery who won the best sandwich in Huntingdon heat of the Hunt for the Best Sandwich in Huntingdonshire competition.

The four shortlisted were Barry Fearn from Samuel Pepys, Phil Walters from The Marriott and Debra Parker- Searle and the children of the Hinchingbrooke Nursery. The Saxongate Centre provided the use of its kitchens and on Friday 29 August all four finalists arrived to make their sandwiches. After a flurry of activity, the finished sandwiches were presented to the judges.

Judges Rosemary Hoskins, Farmers’ Market Manager and Cara Matthewson from Waitrose, had the difficult task of checking the use of locally sourced ingredients and judging the four shortlisted sandwiches for taste and presentation.

Katy Sismore, Huntingdon Town Partnership Manager said; “We are overwhelmed by the standard of all the entries and the effort that has been put in by the four Huntingdon participants.  It was a close run contest and extremely difficult to judge”.

However, a winner had to be chosen, and the decision went to the children of Hinchingbrooke Nursery who created an excellent sandwich of Brioche, fresh strawberries and strawberry curd, which was all handmade.

Katy added; “Well done to all those who submitted their amazing recipes and congratulations also to the four Huntingdon participants who made their sandwich for the judging panel especially the winner, the end result was delicious”.

The children will make their sandwich again when they represent Huntingdon in the third and final round at 2.30pm on Saturday 27 September at Saxongate, Huntingdon.  They will go head to head with the winners from Ramsey and St. Ives and all are welcome to watch the eager finalists work their magic.

Prize-giving will take place during the Food Fest 2008 event on Sunday 28 September and all finalist recipes will be on the menu!

The Huntingdonshire Food and Drink Festival is taking place across the district from Thursday 25 to Monday 29 September.  For more details on the events taking place during the five day festival or to download a food and drink festival calendar of events leaflet visit Food and Drink Festival page using the link on the right.
