Sunday 5 October 2008 saw the return of the Huntingdonshire Disability Sports Forum’s Indoor Sports Festival at the St. Ivo Leisure Centre in St. Ives. This is a large annual event which gives disabled people from around the Huntingdonshire area an opportunity to try different sports. This year’s event attracted 90 participants taking part in 12 different sports including boccia, football, cricket and rifle shooting.

The Huntingdonshire Disability Sports Forum was lucky enough to attract two Great Britain sports stars on the day, Anne Wafula Strike 2004 Paralympic Wheelchair Sprinter and Jo Ellis 2008 Olympic Women’s Hockey Team. Both Athletes were very impressed with the wide variety of sports available some of which they had not had the chance to play when they were growing up such as new age kurling, they were also full of admiration for the volunteers that were leading the sessions.

David Reeve, Event Organiser and Sports Development Officer at Huntingdonshire District Council said; “I was very pleased with the event; it was fantastic to see so many people clearly enjoying themselves and the range of activities on offer. I would like to thank Hunts Howzat Cricket club, St. Ives Rangers Disability Football Team, Huntingdonshire Football Association, St. Ives Rifle and Pistol Club and all the other volunteers that did an excellent job on the day.

The Huntingdonshire Disability Sports Forum is on the look out for new volunteers to help plan for the festivals next year. The forum is currently made up of both disabled and able bodied volunteers, sports development officers, and disability support workers.
