Stilton Sk8z, a group of young people in Stilton were presented with a contract to mark the start of the development of a new skate park in their local area.

Thanks to hard work and dedication from the group, ongoing fundraising over the last two years and the numerous awards of funding, the wheels have been put in motion for the building of the skate park. Once completed in September the new skate park will provide skaters with a suitable and safe location to practice their skills.

Councillor John Davies, Chairman of Huntingdonshire District Council visited the proposed skate park site and presented the contract to six senior youth representatives from Stilton Sk8z along with the chairperson of the group Emily Warren and the three adult members of the Stilton Sk8z, Councillor Peter Mitchell, Carol Warren and Leigh Bettles.

Youngsters from eight to 18 flocked to the area with their skateboards and BMX bikes to demonstrate the skills they will put to good use once the ramps have been built. Along with supporters and parents who had the opportunity to meet Councillor John Davies and officers from the district council, who have been instrumental in helping the young people get this far in the skate ramp project.

About four years ago concerns were raised to the local councillor by the residents that there was nothing to do for the young people in the village. Ideas for a skate park were agreed after a village survey and the Stilton Sk8z group was formed. The youth group, which currently has 48 members, was formed and they have designed and negotiated contracts for what will be a full all wheeled facility.
The sum of £50,000 was secured from a lottery grant, and more than £23,000 has been raised in other ways.

Councillor John Davies, Chairman of the Council said; “When young people are encouraged to become involved in their community they can really make a valuable contribution. This will be a marvellous facility, exactly what the local youngsters have wanted for so long and I feel that it will make a real difference to the community.”
