Cyclists enjoyed a free breakfast at Huntingdon Farmers’ Market last Friday as part of the district council’s support for Bike to Work Week.
The free breakfast was available to those who cycled to the Farmers’ Market before 10am. Local produce was cooked up and served with a cup of Fairtrade tea or coffee by farmers’ market regulars Fen Farm Venison.
“It was a perfect fit for the farmers’ market” said Councillor Colin Hyams, Huntingdonshire District Council’s executive councillor for operational services. “Buying locally-produced food at certified farmers’ markets is one way of protecting the environment as it supports local farmers, cuts down food packaging and reduces the carbon-dioxide emissions caused by the long-distance transport of food. Biking to work is another important contribution, which reduces emissions from cars as well as being a great way to stay fit.”
Councillor Peter Bucknell, Executive Councillor for Transport said; “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast along with riding into work on their bike on such a nice summers morning. Hopefully some will have enjoyed it so much that they will travel to work by bike regularly. It's a great form of exercise, environmentally-friendly and cuts out petrol and parking costs”.
Bike to work Week is the UK’s annual promotion of all kinds of cycling activities with the aim ‘to get more people cycling more often’.The event aims to reduce the number of unnecessary short car journeys and encourage people to consider cycling as an alternative to using the car to commute to work.
