Compost Give Away (04/06/08)

Eight thousand bags of compost are being given away to residents in Huntingdonshire as part of the celebration of Environment Week from Monday 2nd June.

All the Parish and Town Councils in the district were asked if they would like to receive bags of compost for their residents and many of them were delighted to take part in this project to help their residents.

The parishes who have requested bags of compost will receive them during Environment Week (2nd-6th June) and they are then organising their own events to give out the compost to the village residents.

The compost is coming from Huntingdon Recycling at Ellington, which is where all the waste from the green wheeled bins ends up. The garden and kitchen waste is composted over a number of weeks and produces an excellent soil improver. This prevents the waste from going into landfill where it would produce dangerous greenhouse gases.

Cllr. Colin Hyams, Executive Councillor for Operations & Countryside Services said ‘This is a wonderful opportunity to give something back in some small way from Huntingdonshire District Council. There is no doubt that without the residents of Huntingdonshire’s magnificent cooperation, our wheelie bin story would not have been the success it has been. It is one of the best in the country and envied by many other local authorities. We have been really pleased with the take up of this offer and it is our chance to say ‘Thank You’ to the residents of Huntingdonshire for doing such a great job and taking the time and trouble of separating their waste into the correct bins.’

Sonia Hansen, Streetscene Manager for Huntingdonshire District Council said ‘We hope that by taking the compost around to the villages it will save people making unnecessary car journeys, therefore cutting down on carbon emissions.’
