Have you ever fancied trying your hand at basket making? Huntingdonshire District Council is running a two day basket making course on Holt Island Nature Reserve in St Ives. The instructor for the course is Adrian Charlton from Norfolk who has a superb website for you to visit using the link on the right and admire the quality of his work.
During the weekend you will learn the techniques necessary to produce a sturdy basket with a handle, and each person will complete at least one basket to take home.
Holt Island was used to grow osiers until the late 1930s. Osiers are commercially grown willow wands used to make baskets. After production ceased the island became overgrown and a haven for wildlife. A small area of the island has been restored to its original purpose and willow wands are now being harvested.
Countryside Services Ranger, Judith Arnold, said: “This is an excellent opportunity to learn a traditional craft in a wonderful setting on Holt Island, located near to All saints Parish Church in St Ives. “
The two day course runs over the weekend of 21 and 22 June, starting at 10am and finishing at 4pm. There is a small fee of £40.00 for the whole weekend, including materials. People are advised to book early as these weekends are excellent value for money and are always very popular. To book please call 01480 451568
