Tickle our taste buds and be in with a chance to win up to £150 by entering the hunt for the best sandwich competition as part of the Huntingdonshire Food and Drink Festival 2008.
Huntingdonshire is home to the sandwich, named after the fourth Earl of Sandwich who lived in the 18th century at Hinchingbrooke House. The sandwich now takes many different forms and as part of the festival residents, businesses, cafés and restaurants are being challenged to create a winning sandwich. The four finalists will receive £50 each and the overall Huntingdonshire winner will win an extra £100.
All you have to do is write your recipe on an entry form and the four best entries submitted in St Ives, St Neots, Ramsey and Huntingdon will be invited to prepare their sandwich for tasting by a panel of judges locally. One winner selected from each town will be invited to prepare their sandwich in a final heat to find the best sandwich in Huntingdonshire on Saturday 27 September at Saxongate, Huntingdon.
The sandwich competition is one of a number of culinary events taking place at venues across the district this September as part the Huntingdonshire Food and Drink Festival 2008. The festival, taking place from Thursday 25 September to Monday 29 September, aims to showcase the array of top quality produce and local suppliers within the district as well as encouraging people to think local and reduce their food miles to help the environment.
The main event, the food and drink 2008 exhibition at Wood Green Animal Shelter, Godmanchester on Sunday 28 September, will showcase local producers, suppliers and retailers demonstrating the quality of local food and drink on offer. Prize giving for the best sandwich competition will take place during the day and all four finalist recipes will be on the menu!
Corrine Garbett, Economic and Sustainable Development Manager said; “I am really excited about Huntingdonshire’s second food and drink festival. The festival is all about encouraging people to think local. The sandwich competition will help to educate people about what we have available right on our door step because at least 60 per cent of the ingredients must be produced within 50 miles of the Huntingdonshire boundary. The competition will be great fun for everyone, so get entering and good luck!.”
Further details of the festival’s events and entry forms with details and rules of the competition are available on the website which can be accessed using the link on the right or are available from Trish Bradbury 01480 388443. Entry forms are being collected in each of Huntingdonshire’s four market towns, St Neots, Ramsey, St Ives and Huntingdon and must be returned by 31 July 2008.
The festival is being managed by Huntingdonshire District Council and sponsored by Anglian Water, Tesco, Waitrose, The Huntingdon Marriott, The Hunts Post and The Old Bridge.
