This week marks the anniversary of the Smokefree legislation, which will be one year old on the 1 July 2008 and Huntingdonshire District Council has been at the forefront of implementing the successful introduction of this significant public health legislation.
During the year, officers have found that many enclosed public places, working environments and public transport providers have embraced this popular law and compliance levels throughout the district have been excellent.
In first nine months, environmental health staff have visited over 1500 business premises and vehicles and found almost 100 per cent compliant with the regulations.
Oliver Langford, Smokefree Implementation Officer said; “The law has quickly become self-enforcing and only in a minority of cases has it been necessary for us to send formal warnings and advice letters. To date we have only issued one fixed penalty notice. Our aim is to continue to work with businesses to support them in meeting their legal duties.”
A number of businesses that the council has visited have used the introduction of the smokefree law as an opportunity to develop their services in other areas and are now enjoying the benefits of attracting new clientele to a cleaner, healthier, smokefree environment. Research at the National Cancer Research Institute Conference revealed hospitality workers exposure to harmful second hand smoke has fallen by 95 per cent since introduction of the legislation. This is also having a positive effect on smokers, as 74 per cent are reported as wanting to quit.
Councillor Deborah Reynolds Executive Councillor for Environmental Health said; “The smokefree law was an important step for public health in England and its introduction has resulted in a significant reduction in second hand tobacco smoke with its damaging effects on health. Now everyone has the right to enjoy the benefits of a cleaner, healthier environment.”
In partnership with Camquit, the council continues to offer free stop smoking support to local businesses to help them create a smoke-free workforce. To date 12 businesses have received in-house support from a Camquit cessation officer and a further 40 local employees have received training in offering stop smoking advice. This includes a number of local fitness professionals who are based at local leisure centres and health clubs. At the weekend Oliver attended the Unity in the Community Event in Huntingdon to promote this service.
