A contribution of £50,000 is being made by Huntingdonshire District Council  towards a road improvement at a junction where an Alconbury teenager was killed in May 2007. It is anticipated that Huntingdon Town Council may commit a similar amount.

Already £160,000 has been pledged by Cambridgeshire County Council which is drawing up a scheme that would ban traffic turning right into and out of Kings Ripton Road, Huntingdon as part of its approved 2008/09 accident remedies and traffic management programme. It was here that 16-year-old Warren Hay was killed when he crossed the road on his way to a football match at nearby Jubilee Park.

The additional contribution will enable an enhanced scheme to be considered. The Huntingdonshire Traffic Management Area Joint Committee, which consists of county, district and parish councillors, at a meeting last year suggested that the improvement to the junction should include traffic lights with a controlled pedestrian crossing. An action group formed in Warren Hay’s memory is raising funds in a number of ways towards a light-controlled crossing at the junction.

Councillor Ian Bates, leader of Huntingdonshire District Council, said: “This was a tragic accident which involved the loss of a young life. The local community are working hard to find additional funds to that already pledged. We wanted to make our contribution.

Details of the proposed improvement will be presented to the Huntingdonshire Traffic Management Area Joint Committee in due course.
