Bucks For Bangers How To Dispose Of Your Vehicle Responsibly (06/08/08)

Do you have a vehicle that has come to the end of its useful life? The End of Life Vehicles Regulation was introduced to allow free disposal of vehicles, but due to the price of scrap metal going up you can now cash in on your car and get ‘bucks for bangers’ even if it is collected.

The regulations state that all vehicles must be disposed of correctly at an authorised treatment facility. Burtons Car Disposal in Old Weston or Brian Ayres in Alconbury are two available options.

The Environment Agency regulates treatment facilities where vehicles are drained of all liquids and have parts such as tyres and batteries removed for recycling before the vehicle is crushed.

The DVLA is then informed that the vehicle has been disposed of responsibly so that a certificate of destruction can be issued.

Councillor Colin Hyams, Executive Councillor for Operations said; “Since the rise in the price of scrap metal, theft has increased, with opportunists offering to remove vehicles for cash.  Beware of giving your car to someone for a few pounds who will take your car away without any paperwork.  We urge the public to ensure they do it the right way.”

He added; “Previously one of my vehicles needed repairs, but unfortunately due to the value of the car it was not worth doing them, so I used the council contacts to dispose of the vehicle the correct way. My personal experience of using the service is that it was very simple and the DVLA were very helpful.”

Anyone who takes a vehicle away from your premises should be a registered waste carrier and be able to produce a valid waste transfer note and a certificate of destruction.  If they can’t, do not let them take your car away as it may not be disposed of correctly and the DVLA may not informed.  You may then find yourself responsible for fines if your car’s identity is cloned or used in criminal activities.
A list of Authorised Treatment Facilities is updated monthly on the Environment Agency website which can be accessed using the link on the right.
