Working Together For The Future Of Huntingdon Town Hall (21/08/08)

Huntingdonshire District Council and Huntingdon Town Council are working together to secure the viable future of the Town Hall in Huntingdon.

Whilst the second floor is occupied by the Town Council, the remainder of the building and the responsibility for its upkeep, lies with HM Courts Services, which last year inherited 999 year leases dating back to 1840.

The two councils have commissioned survey work on the condition of the building.  Whilst there do not appear to be any major structural concerns, a range of work has been recommended to put the building in good order and renew services such as heating and lighting.  The cost of this work could exceed £1 million, without taking into account any conversion works needed for a new use.  Further more intrusive surveys have also been commissioned to ensure the councils have all the necessary information.

Given the 2 Star Listed status of the building there are likely to be real constraints on the type of works that will be acceptable.  This, together with the wish to keep the building in public use as far as possible, will limit the opportunities to find a viable use.

Both councils, however, are committed to finding a positive way forward once the present lessees, HM Courts Services, have determined how they wish to proceed.  The councils are concerned that any potential surrender of the current leases should be on appropriate terms in the light of the responsibilities of the current holders of the lease. In the meantime, a close watch is being kept on the condition of the building and any urgent works brought to HM Courts Services attention.
