Ramsey sandwich makers have stepped up to the plate and entered the hunt for the best sandwich competition with the hope of winning £150, as part of the Huntingdonshire Food and Drink Festival 2008. The town has completed its first round of judging and four tasty recipes have gone forward to the next round.
Recipes were judged for their healthy content and use of local produce. The four successful entrants, the children of Ramsey Nursery, Teigan Fox, Garrick Fox and Susan Normington will now prepare and present their sandwich for the judges to mark on taste and presentation. The sandwiches will be prepared on 15 August at The Bow Window Restaurant in Ramsey which has opened its kitchens for the competition so the sandwiches will be made in first class, professional surroundings.
The winner of this round will be declared the best sandwich in Ramsey and will go head to head with the winners from St. Ives, St. Neots and Huntingdon. The four finalists will receive £50 each and will be invited to prepare their sandwich in a final heat to find the best sandwich in Huntingdonshire on Saturday 27 September at Saxongate, Huntingdon. All are welcome. The overall Huntingdonshire winner will win an extra £100.
Prize giving for the best sandwich competition will take place at the Food Fest 2008 event at Wood Green Animal Shelter on 28 September where all four finalist recipes will be on the menu!
The judges are Robert Hartley, owner of the Bow Window Restaurant, Ramsey, Tina Stonebridge, Practise Sister, Rainbow Surgery, Ramsey, Val Lenton, Catering Manager, Abbey College, Ramsey and Helen Taylor, who has a diploma in professional cooking.
Vera Woolmer Ramsey Town Centre Manager said; “We were delighted with the recipes we received, especially from the younger members of our community. There has clearly been a lot of thought about healthy eating and the use of local produce. We are now looking forward to declaring the Ramsey winner and are hopeful for the district wide title!” Vera Woolmer, Ramsey Town Centre Partnership, organiser of the Ramsey sandwich competition.
The sandwich competition is one of a number of culinary events taking place at venues across the district this September as part the Huntingdonshire Food and Drink Festival 2008. The festival, taking place from Thursday 25 September to Monday 29 September, aims to showcase the array of top quality produce and local suppliers within the district as well as encouraging people to think local and reduce their food miles to help the environment.
The festival is being managed by Huntingdonshire District Council and sponsored by Anglian Water, Tesco, Waitrose, The Huntingdon Marriott, The Hunts Post and The Old Bridge.
