Community Win Cash While Learning New Tricks (06/08/08)

prize winners at the Ramsey Community Information Centre

Three lucky winners collected their prize money on Monday (28 July) at the Community Information Centre in Ramsey after taking part in a fun and learning day in May.

The prizes were presented by Penny Litchfield, Neighbourhood Manager, who helped organise the event, and Jan Janeen, Community Development Worker at Muir Housing, who donated some of the money.

Hannah Hardy, Michelle Smith and Josephine Woodley all had a go at something new. The range of activities on offer included art, music, nature, technology, sport and driving related activities.

Each participant completed a passport to prove they had taken part. Hannah, winner of first prize of £100 completed three hours of learning on the day. Hannah said; “It was good fun, I enjoyed the art, especially decorating the t shirts, and the kids did too”.

The event bought together a new residents group, the Ramsey Back on Track group and people from all over Ramsey and surrounding area, at the football club and St Georges Field. The fun and learning day was one of 14 courses and events organised between December and June for adults. It was funded by the Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities (NLDC) fund and had input from several organisations. More of the same will be planned for next year, if funds are available.

Education, skills and training form one of the priorities set for the Neighbourhood Management approach as there is a notable lack of skills in the area that people can use to improve their employment prospects.
