Sunday 7 October saw the return of the Annual Indoor Disability Sports Festival, which took place at the St Ivo Leisure Centre, St Ives. The day offered disabled people the opportunity to take part in 11 different sports all under one roof.
Over 80 disabled sports people of all ages from around the district attended the event and took part in sports such as cricket, boccia, tai chi and many more. Organised by Huntingdonshire Disability Sports Forum and Huntingdonshire District Council the festival welcomed Jayant Mistry, former British number one wheelchair tennis player as part of the sporting champion’s scheme.
Jayant spoke to participants and said; “It is great to come back to the type of event that started it all for me after representing Great Britain at four Para-Olympic Games and winning two grand slam doubles titles”.
He passed round his 2005 Wimbledon doubles winner’s trophy, which went down really well with everybody.
David Reeve, Community Sport and Recreation Officer and Festival Co-Ordinator said; “This sporting event has attracted participants from far and wide. I hope that everybody will have been influenced by Jayant’s experiences and can see that the world of sport holds plenty of opportunities for them. Thanks must go to Hunts Howzat Cricket Club, St Ives Rangers Disability Football Club, the St Ivo Indoor Centre staff and all the volunteers that made the day a great success.”
