To ensure the safety of the public during a critical stage of the partial demolition of the Huntingdonshire District Council’s Huntingdon offices the contractor Alfred McAlpine will have to close one lane of the ring road.
The inside lane and footpath will be closed between 9.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. on weekdays only starting on Tuesday 4 December 2007. It is expected that the critical stage of the work will take no more than ten days and the council and the contractor are hopeful that it will be completed in less.
Richard Preston, the council’s Head of Technical Services said, “We have looked at every possible way of doing this work safely but reluctantly have come to the conclusion that there is no alternative to closing a lane of the ring road. The work will be done outside of the morning and evening peak time but we have to accept that there will be delays for which we apologise. Hopefully, the work can be completed in less time than planned and we will do all that we can safely to achieve this. We will be putting up additional signs so that it is clear to shoppers and visitors to the town that this is only a short-term closure.”
The ring road will be reduced to a single lane from the Godmanchester side of the river bridge and on the approach to the traffic lights on Riverside by the Bridge Hotel. The inside lane of the ring road will be closed from these traffic lights to just before St Mary’s Street junction. Before 9.30 a.m. after 4.30p.m. and at the weekend there will be no restrictions on the ring road.
