Huntingdonshire Health Walkers Circle The Earth (26/03/07)

Walkers on the Huntingdonshire Health Walks Scheme have achieved over 10,000 attendances, with an average of 9 people on each walk, covering approximately 25,000 miles in total, which is the equivalent of walking the circumference of the earth!

The Huntingdonshire Health Walks Scheme has been running since 2004 and during that time the residents of Huntingdonshire have been walking their way to health on a regular basis. The walks are run in partnership with Huntingdonshire District Council and Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trust.

Research by the Department of Health found that six out of 10 men and seven out of 10 women are currently not active enough to have any benefit to their health. Walking is a low risk activity and has been shown to have numerous health benefits. Walking is free and there is no requirement for specialist equipment.

The walks take place throughout the week in St Ives, St Neots, Huntingdon and Ramsey and we recently started walks during the weekends. The incentive scheme was launched in January 2005 and awards regular walkers with prizes such as pedometers, water bottles and t-shirts.

New walkers are always welcome to come along and walk their way to health. It is recommended that you wear warm comfortable clothes to walk in as well as sensible sturdy footwear, such as trainers or walking shoes. Please arrive 15 minutes before the time stated on the programme to register and meet the walk leaders.
