Local residents are being asked to give their views on a sub-regional Choice Based Lettings Scheme (CBL).
The seven local authorities in the Cambridge sub-region are developing a sub-regional Choice Based Lettings scheme (CBL) and are currently consulting on their lettings policies. CBL changes how available council and housing association homes are let. It allows landlords to advertise available properties and customers to choose which homes they’re interested in. Lettings policies are then used to prioritise customers and decide who is offered a home, based on housing needs and waiting time of those who express an interest.
Although it will not increase the number of homes available, CBL provides a more open and accountable way of letting homes, giving customers more say in where they are housed and more information about availability.
The Cambridge sub-region is seen as one of the UK's major growth areas. Cambridge City Council, St Edmundsbury Borough Council and East Cambridgeshire , Fenland, Forest Heath, Huntingdonshire and South Cambridgeshire District Councils are all involved in the scheme, which will be introduced in 2008. Working together to implement the scheme means better value for money through sharing ICT and implementation costs and will provide improved mobility across the sub-region.
Everyone, from existing tenants and people waiting to be housed, to local residents and key stakeholders, are invited to contact their local council or housing association to express their views on the scheme. Each organisation is producing its own individual lettings policy, which are based on common principals, to ensure homes are let in a similar way across the sub-region.
