St Neots Gets A River Clean Up (29/06/07)

A river clean up in St Neots will be taking place on Tuesday morning 3 July 2007. Organised by Huntingdonshire District Council, St Neots Town council, RiverCare Project, Environment Agency, local rowing club and canoe club, it will bring many organisations together to improve a stretch of the River Ouse which runs through St Neots town centre.
RiverCare representatives have already identified main areas where litter gathers and which would benefit from a clean up. Huntingdonshire District Council’s countryside services and the street rangers are working together to lead this event and the rowing club will act as a base for the project. Two teams of volunteers will work along the banks of the river, collecting litter that has got trapped in the vegetation. A boat and crew provided by the Environment Agency will tackle larger items dumped in the river, with members of the rowing and canoe clubs collecting refuse along the edges.
”It is a very positive step that many organisations are working together to improve the river corridor in preparation for the Inland Waterways Festival which is taking place in St Ives in August. The river is such an important feature in many of our towns and villages and has huge value for wildlife too” said Kirsty Drew, countryside services ranger for Huntingdonshire District Council. “This river clean up in St Neots will hopefully lead to more action being taken in other main towns in Huntingdonshire.”
