The obelisk milestone at Stocks Bridge on the Needingworth Road, St Ives has had a face lift. This structure, which is listed as well as being a scheduled ancient monument, has been repaired, re-sited and repainted with funding from Huntingdonshire District Council.
The original position of the obelisk was lost many years ago when a roundabout was introduced for highway safety and the obelisk was moved to the side of the road. Now it has been moved back further from the side of the road, as some protection from possible impact. The repairs involved dismantling the stone and taking it to a stonemason where the repairs were undertaken. It was then re-sited two metres from its former position and painted. Kerbstones and gravel have been added to the base.
The work has been undertaken as part of a project which has seen the refurbishment of four other milestones which Cambridgeshire County Council highways team will be re-siting in the near future.
Councillor Peter Bucknell, the district council’s executive councillor for planning strategy, environment and transport, said: “It is important that these local landmarks are conserved. They are part of our district’s heritage and history. I am delighted the district council is able to play its part in ensuring they are retained.”
