And the winner is…..
To promote Noise Action Week the Environmental Protection team at Huntingdonshire District Council, working in partnership with Luminus Group, ran a lyric competition to write new words to the old song ‘Smoke gets in your eyes’ with the title ‘Noise gets in your ears’.
The competition was publicised in the council’s magazine District Wide and on the website and all submissions were displayed during Noise Action Week at Huntingdonshire District Council offices and with the Team on their highly successful Roadshows in St Ives and Huntingdon, with visitors being asked to  vote for the lyrics they liked best.
The winning entry, by a slim margin, was Terry Schooling from Chatteris.  The runner up was Pete Lummis from Hampton Vale.

Here are Terry’s winning lyrics:

Is the story really true
Of harm that noise will do?
Decibels are a curse;
It is surely so,
There are few things worse.

Once, with joy we’d always hear
Nature’s music clear.
So much noise abounds,
Today we drown in sound
Noise gets in your ears.

Everyone, carelessly goes their way,
Oblivious of the harm.
Until too late
they realize their fate,
Their hearings gone for good.

Now, when friends around them speak,
Their hearing is too weak.
They suddenly understand,
Their eyes are filled with tears,
For all those careless years
When noise got in their ears.

And here are Pete’s:

They asked me how I knew
My I-pod was true
Oh, I of course replied
Loud noise here inside
Cannot be denied

They said someday you'll find
Loud noise makes you deaf
Oh, when your ear drums hum
You must not be dumb
Noise gets in your ears

So I chaffed them
And I loudly laughed
To think they could doubt my pod
Yet today my pod blew me away
I am without my songs

Now, laughing friends enjoy
Songs I cannot hear
Oh, so I smile and shout
When a lovely sound dies
Noise gets in your ears
Noise gets in your ears
