Weekend Walks – Underway Again (15/01/07)

A group of walkers

Walking has been shown to have a huge benefit on physical health and wellbeing. Regular walking can increase your confidence levels, and stamina. There is no need for specialist equipment and is a free, accessible and low risk activity.

The Huntingdonshire Health Walks have been running for almost four years and are run in partnership with Huntingdonshire District Council, Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trust and the Countryside Agency. Walks are held in St Ives, St Neots, Huntingdon and Ramsey during the day on weekdays. Now walks are being held at weekends.

Lisa Curry, Health Walks Co-ordinator said, “The walks at the weekend aim to include people who are unable to attend the health walks during the week due to other commitments.”

The programme of walks at the weekend started in January. The next one will be on Saturday 3 February 2007, at St Ives.  It will start from the car park at the St Ivo Leisure Centre and will follow the path along the Thicket to Houghton.

The walks are led by qualified volunteer walk leaders unless otherwise stated. Monthly walks programmes are available from your local library or surgery. The walks schedule can also be viewed on in link to the leisure development web page which is on the right hand side under related information.

New walkers are always welcome to come along and walk their way to health. It is recommended that you wear warm comfortable clothes to walk in as well as sensible sturdy footwear, such as trainers or walking shoes. It is advised that you arrive 15 minutes before the time stated on the programme to register and meet the walk leaders.
