Visitors and volunteers who attend Sunday work parties or enjoy Holt Island are invited to become Friends of Holt Island Nature Reserve.
People young and old enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful nature reserve on the edge of town by All Saints Parish Church, overlooking the river Great Ouse and Hemingford Meadow.
The Friends of Holt Island Nature Reserve group is being set up to build on the existing base of those who use the island to access funding opportunities available to community groups and to help maintain and improve the facilities on the island.
Participation can be as much or as little as individuals would like, from helping to raise funds to being part of the group, to coming along to occasional meetings or to just receive the newsletter.
The first meeting will be held in the non smoking bar of the Golden Lion Pub in St Ives in the Market Square on Thursday 25 January 2007 at 7.30 pm. If you would like to support the Friends, but cannot come along, please contact Bridget Halford, the Countryside Ranger, on 07917 554057 for more details.
Regular visitors enjoy a walk around the island to spot the wildlife and young children enjoy the nature trails and colouring table. People who find walking difficult appreciate the boardwalk that gives easy access through the island. Volunteers contribute to the upkeep of the island and learn new skills whilst meeting friendly people and visiting the nature reserve is a great way to keep fit!
