Ramsey was one of many market towns across the six counties of the East of England invited earlier this year to enter for a national award for the best completed project in the fields of
- Business and Economy
- Social and Community
- Environment and Culture
- Partnership and Strategic Working
Jointly organised in the East of England by Action for Market Towns and East of England Development Agency (EEDA), the regional awards were recently announced and the Ramsey Area Partnership was delighted to hear that it had been awarded the best market town project in the East of England in the environment and culture category.
The award was for the Ramsey Waterside Regeneration project. This project has enhanced local distinctiveness by creating an environment to showcase the town’s unique river gateway to attract visitors and locals alike. New moorings, access improvements, lighting, planting, heritage interpretation and public art, have created a clear link between the gateway and the economic centre of Ramsey.
Sally Williams, of Action for Market Towns, said; “The Ramsey Area Partnership has yet again shown how regeneration within key sites of our market towns can have a positive impact for not only local residents but also visitors to the area.”
Councillor Peter Bucknell said; ”As a key partner of the Ramsey Area Partnership, Huntingdonshire District Council has been pleased to be able to support the community in helping to enhance this key area of the town. Already users of the waterway are taking advantage of the new moorings at the site and we hope this will continue with the National Inward Waterways Festival, being held in St Ives this month, bringing boat users from across the country to the area.”
David Sutton, the land owner of the site, said; “I am pleased to have been able to support this project for the local community of Ramsey and welcome the recognition from the East of England Development Agency and Action for Market Towns on the success of the enhancements.”
