Godmanchester River Clean-up
A road sign, half a bicycle, some fencing, three shopping trolleys and nine bags of litter were collected during a river clean-up operation in Godmanchester on 11 April 2012.
The clean-up was undertaken by Huntingdonshire District Council’s Operations and Countryside Teams and the Environment Agency’s Rivercare team who provided a boat so they could reach some of the heavier items from the river.
The Operations and Countryside volunteers concentrated on the river banks and the recreation areas picking up litter.
Sonia Hansen, the council’s Streetscene Manager, said: “We have some beautiful parks and countryside, and the river is there for visitors and residents to enjoy. One of the worst areas we cleaned was under the bridge by the Bridge Hotel. We would urge people visiting the river and parks to help keep the area clean and tidy by using the litter bins provided, or taking their rubbish home.”
A fine of £75 can be imposed on anyone caught dropping litter or throwing rubbish in the river.
Anyone interested in organising a river clean up in their area can contact Sonia Hansen, Streetscene Manager on 01480 388630.
