Response to weekly collections

Response to Eric Pickles announcement to reinstate weekly bin collections

Huntingdonshire District Council residents recycle a significant proportion of their household waste (57% last year) which has given the council one of the highest recycling rates in the country.

The council has no plans to introduce weekly bin collections for household waste. The council currently collects different types of waste weekly, recycling one week and household waste the next. In addition to this service residents are able to have their food waste collected weekly by placing it in either their grey bin (household waste) or their green bin (garden waste).

Through the various methods the council uses to collect waste across the district, the amount of household rubbish collected has fallen whilst recycling has continued to increase.

Councillor Darren Tysoe, executive councillor for environment, said: Our impressive results have been achieved thanks to a combination of residents' efforts, ongoing education and excellent services with over 82 per cent of the residents satisfied with the service we provide. Although we have no plans to move to weekly refuse collections we will look at the details of the policy announcement by the Secretary of State to learn more about the fund and how he proposes to increase recycling through its use.”
