Holt Island Nature Reserve

an ilustrated map of the Holt Island nature reserve

This 7 acre (2.8 hectare) reserve includes the remnants of the once worked Osier Beds, native tree species and beds of phragmites reed mixed with sedge. Whether you are enjoying the peaceful setting, or photographing the wildlife, we hope you enjoy your visit.

You can keep to date with news from the Island by becoming a Friend and receiving regular copies of "The Islander".  You can also download this newsletter by using the links to the right.

The Boardwalk

Facilities

The island is open Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays between April and September, 10:30 am – 5:00 pm. If you wish to visit the Island at any other time between April and September the key is available from the St Ivo Leisure Centre (a returnable deposit will be needed). There are no toilet facilities on the island, the nearest public toilets are at the bus station approximately 1km away. There is time limited parking along The Waits on the way into St Ives town centre and many pay and display car parks within or near to the centre.

There are a number of seats around the boardwalk at good vantage points for wildlife spotting and relaxing by the river.

Disabled Access

There is very limited parking near to the island but this is not dedicated disabled parking. The island has a circular boardwalk so it is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs in all weathers. The bridge onto the island, however, may become slippery when it is wet.

Education

School groups are welcome to visit Holt Island, please speak to the Rangers on 01480 451568 for more assistance.  To see the type of activities on offer, use the link to the right to download an education brochure.

Dog walking

Dogs are welcome on the island but must be kept on a lead at all times. Owners are asked to clear up and remove their dog’s mess from the island.
