Huntingdonshire has delightful heritage houses and gardens welcoming visitors. Each has its own unique history, legends and myths.
Elton Hall’s gardens are rose fragranced in summer providing a perfect backdrop to the magnificent house. Make an appointment to visit The Manor, built in 1130; it is reputedly the oldest continuously inhabited house in England. The house and garden is a living storybook – the setting for the Green Knowe children’s books. Visitors can also see the exquisite Lucy Boston patchwork collection made in the house.
Cromwell connections link Ramsey Abbey and Hinchingbrooke House - both were owned by the Cromwell family. Today, the Abbey, like Hinchingbrooke House, is used as a school. Young Oliver Cromwell reputedly played at Hinchingbrooke House as a child.
The floral theme is reflected in many of the towns and villages. In the summer, flowerbeds and hanging baskets are a riot of colour. Some have won prizes in the “Anglia in Bloom” competition. For gardening enthusiasts, Huntingdonshire is blessed with a variety of garden centres offering something to interest everyone.
