Ancient Churches And Picturesque Villages

Great Staughton Church

The towers and spires of ancient churches, which are centrepieces of lovely villages, punctuate Huntingdonshire’s landscape. Each church and village has its own special charm waiting for you to discover.

In the north, around the gentle Nene Valley, the villages are reminiscent of the Cotswolds in miniature. Around the River Great Ouse the villages have thatched cottages, the images of picture postcards.

The churches at the neighbouring villages of Hemingford Abbots and Hemingford Grey have wonderful riverside locations well worth a visit. In the west, by contrast, the gently rolling landscape is broken by a series of fine church spires.

Houghton Cottages

Huntingdonshire's towns also have remarkable churches. Until the time of the Black Death, Huntingdon had sixteen churches, today only two remain. Look at the spire of All Saints' Church in St Ives and notice that it had to be rebuilt after being hit by a plane in the First World War.  Peep through the door of St Mary's Church in Godmanchester to glimpse choir stalls from Ramsey Abbey. Interestingly, Ramsey's Thomas à Becket Church was originally built as a hospital for the Abbey. A trip to St Neots Parish Church will reward the visitor with views of fine carvings of animals, birds and angels.
