Summer Sailing For 16 Plus

As part of the newly devised Community Sports Network several participants from across the district had the opportunity to take part in an evening sailing course at Grafham Water Centre.

The Course organised in partnership with Huntingdonshire District Council's Leisure Development team and the staff at Grafham Water saw young people aged 16-34 learn to sail in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere over a series of five evenings; this gave the sailors the chance to improve their techniques on a regular basis under expert tuition.

Those attending the course were split into two groups dependent on previous experience. People who had never sailed before were taken through the basics using a proven method sailing in Laser Picos - single person boats to allow the maximum time for acquiring the skills - and were successful in achieving the Royal Yachting Association Level 1 for dinghy sailing. Those in the group who had done some sailing before developed their existing skills further in Laser 2000s and Laser Bahias - more advanced two person boats with two sails - to achieve level 2, a nationally recognised level of competence in handling a dinghy and the pre-requisite for boat hire around the country.

Paul Ashbridge, Sports Activator  commented: “This project is new to the district, aiming to increase participation levels of those aged 16-34, it was a delight to see the participants  fully involved in the course and enjoying themselves.”

Summer Golf Courses for 16-24 year olds

Throughout the summer participants aged 16-24 were able to try and improve on their golfing skills. The course was taught by the staff at the Lakeside Lodge golf complex in Pidley as part of the newly devised Community Sports Network. The sessions were run in a group environment throughout a Monday evening; giving the participants the opportunity to improve their own techniques on a regular basis under coach supervision.

The small group of individuals were of mixed ability; those with limited experience were developed from a basic level, whilst those with some experience had the chance to improve on their techniques. The 8 week crash course consisted of basic information and rules surrounding the equipment and golf swings, long and short game play, bunker and chip shots, and the opportunity to try out those new learned skills around one of the Lakeside Lodge golf courses.
