The phrase 'the arts' describes a very broad range of creative activity. The following list gives some examples:
- visual arts (such as painting and print-making, sculpture and so on)
- crafts (pottery, ceramics, jewellery-making etc)
- performing arts (dance, drama, music, opera, new circus)
- literature (creative writing, poetry, storytelling)
- media (film, video, photography, computer design)
It is widely acknowledged that the arts have the capacity to inspire, inform, challenge, raise self-esteem, provide pleasure and allow for self expression to individuals, and can assist in the maintenance of sound mental-health.
To communities, the arts improve the quality of life by providing a focus for social activity, create a sense of pride and identity, and develop transferable and life skills.
The arts also provide local employment, enhance the local economy and help create a cultural identity for the district.
