Disabled Facilities Assistance

If you or someone you live with is disabled you don’t need us to tell you that life can sometimes be frustrating.  People with disabilities want to be independent, want to do things for themselves.  People who care for a disabled person want to encourage that independence and don’t want the job of caring to be made more difficult than it need be.

But often it is not so much the disability itself as the environment that is the disabling factor – the high steps, the narrow doorways, the cramped bathroom or the shelves or fittings or handles that are set too high:  these are the things that frustrate independence.

These things are bad enough when they’re met with outside the home.  But far worse is when the disabling environment is inside the one place we all should be able to live in with as much comfort, safety and independence as possible.

Making a home a less disabling environment for a disabled person can be expensive.  This is where a disabled facilities grant (or “DFG”) may be able to help.

A DFG can help you meet some or all of the cost of an aid or adaptation.

To make an application for a DFG we recommend that you telephone Cambs Direct on 0845 045 5205

The person taking your call will ask you questions about yourself.  This information will be passed to your local Occupational Therapy team and an appointment will be made by an Occupational Therapist (OT) to visit and assess your needs.

The administration of DFGs is undertaken by the Home Improvement Agency on behalf of the Council usually following a referral from an Occupational Therapist.
