Litter Bins

Whilst the District Council is responsible for most of the litter bins throughout the District, some bins are also provided by your local Town or Parish council.

In most areas, we do not provide separate dog waste bins, but ask that dog owners clean up after their dogs and place the wrapped waste in our normal litter bins.

What we do

Litter bin emptying

How often we empty a litter bin, depends on where it is and how much it is used.  In very busy areas, some bins are emptied several times a day, whilst in others, they may only need emptying once a week.  We constantly check how much bins are being used, and change how often we empty them based on what is needed at that time.  Some bins are used all the time in the summer, but not at all in the winter. Others are only used during winter periods.

New and Replacement bins

Before we put a new litter bin in place, we run checks to make sure that it is a spot where litter is dropped. Often the litter you see, is not where it was dropped, but where the wind blew it after someone dropped it, so we try to work out where people are dropping it and place the bins there.

Better still, we try to encourage everyone to not drop litter, but take it home and dispose of it their rubbish bin.

We have over one thousand five hundred litter bins sited all across the district which we empty and maintain. Bins are often the target of vandals, and we routinely have to replace bins that are either burnt or badly damaged.

As the area develops and grows, extra bins are needed and each year we install additional bins at new locations that we identify as needing them.

Town and parish councils also provide some litter bins.  Some they empty themselves, and some we empty for them.

How can you help us

Keeping the district clean and litter free costs local taxpayers nearly £1 million every year.

  • Use the litter bins where they are provided, or better still, take your litter home.
  • Don’t drop chewing gum.  It makes a mess and costs a lot of money to clean off once it has been trodden into the ground. Please wrap up your chewing gum and either put it in a litter bin or take it home with you.
  • If you wish to report a broken or damaged litter bin, please call us with details about its location, colour and type if you can. This will help us to identify the exact bin, and get the right parts or replacement.
  • If you think an area needs additional bins, please let us know and we will see if we can help.
  • Please encourage your family and friends to be responsible and not to drop litter.  It will help us to keep Huntingdonshire clean, and will help to keep local taxes down.
