Graffiti and Flyposting activity is illegal, as well as being an unsightly nuisance. Illegal signs can cause genuine information or warning signs to be obscured, and can cause a hazard to pedestrians.
Graffiti
The Operations division of the council remove graffiti from accessible public places and not on private property. Removal of racist or offensive graffiti is normally completed within 48 hours of it being reported.
For graffiti on private property, you may wish to contact your town council, as some town councils hold a small graffiti removal kit.
Flyposting
Flyposting is the term used to cover the posting of flyers, posters, advertising bills etc., on windows of vacant properties, in phone boxes and so on. Flyposting is an unsightly nuisance.
Illegal Signs
The term 'illegal signs' refers to any notices that are put up on the public highway without prior permission. This may be 'A' boards advertising businesses which are on the pavement, notices tied to lamp-posts ('Look who's 40!' or 'Furniture Sale' type notices). Illegal signs are routinely removed by the Operations division.
We do not remove temporary signs for organised community and charity events unless these are left in place for any length of time after the event has taken place.
Reporting Graffiti and Illegal Signs
If you wish to report any of the above activities, please contact us. We will need accurate location details, and an indication of the scale / size of the problem would be useful. If you have any information about the person responsible, please let us know, we can pass the details to our Community Safety Team where appropriate (see Related Information, above right).
In order to work efficiently on all of the services we provide throughout the district, we 'batch' work to give crews enough to do over one or two days, and therefore your report may not be dealt with immediately.
