Huntingdon West Area Action Plan

Huntingdon West is likely to change dramatically over the next 20 years. Re-routing of the A14 and demolition of the flyover could offer tremendous opportunities for environmental improvement and new development.

The Huntingdon West Area Action Plan will help shape the future of this area. It will contain site specific proposals and general policies for development in this part of Huntingdon.

Huntingdon West offers the ideal opportunity for promoting environmentally friendly development providing homes, work and leisure close together, linked by excellent pedestrian, cycle and public transport routes.

The Consultation Process to Date

The consultation period for the Issues and Options document ran from 15 June to 27 July 2007. The Issues and Options were written to stimulate debate on what we might need to tackle in the Area Action Plan. An interactive version of the Area Action Plan is available in the 'External Links' box to the right, showing the comments made.

We are now at a stage of evaluating Options which will lead to the production of a Preferred Option document later in 2008. These Options have been informed by responses on the Issues and Options, together with informal discussions with key stakeholders.

The Options document is in the 'Linked Documents' box to the right. Comments received on this up to early June 2008 are available to view through the Huntingdonshire District Council Consultation Portal in the 'External Links' box.

Sustainability appraisals on the Issues and Options document and on the Options are available in 'Linked Documents'. The sustainability appraisal evaluates the options in terms of objectives which are common to all the documents produced as part of the Local Development Framework.

What happens next?

We will be considering all the responses and appraisals to date and intend to produce a Preferred Option late 2008. The Preferred Option may be a mixture of the Options, or it may take on board new alternatives offered in responses. The Preferred Option document will also contain a vision, objectives and policies to help guide development in the Area as well as details of phasing and implementation.  A six week period for consultation will follow the release of the Preferred Option. The process needs to follow regulations issued in June 2008 and after the Preferred Option we intend to produce a Submission Draft for final comment before being submitted to the Secretary of State in 2009.
