DPDs are a statutory element of the Local Development Framework and will be subject to extensive community involvement, consultation and independent examination by an Inspector to ensure that the necessary legal requirements for the preparation of the document have been met and that the document is sound.

There are several stages in the preparation of DPDs, including the publication of a Preferred Options paper for consultation, followed by a submission DPD. The submission DPD is then subject to public consultation, including an examination by an independent Inspector. The Inspector may make changes to the DPD arising from the public consultations before the Council can formally adopt it.
