Huntingdon Market Square

The District Council has completed a capital scheme to carry out environmental improvements to Market Hill, costing some £500,000. This involved paving the square in herringbone bricks and Yorkshire paving around the perimeter. The lighting has been improved and uplighters installed to highlight the refurbished War Memorial. The War Memorial - The Thinking Soldier - was erected in 1923 and was funded by the Women's Institute. The sculptress was Lady Scott. A booklet to commemorate the memorial was recently published by the Women's Institute.

An artist was commissioned to create seating for the Market Square, to design a roundel for the front of the square and to design two gateway features for the area.

Pedestrianisation of the High Street was introduced on 30 July 2001 after the construction of a car park for disabled badge holders off St Germain Street.

St Ives Environmental Improvement Scheme - Bridge St/Crown St

Bridge Street and Crown Street was identified as a priority in a long-term strategy to revitalise and enhance St Ives Town Centre. The removal of traffic congestion in Bridge Street has improved the environment for shoppers and provided a long-term benefit to the area. Future enhancements will be considered as part of a package of measures to improve the vitality of the town centre

Bridge Street and Crown Street is now ‘semi-pedestrianised’. Vehicles are permitted between 8am and 6pm for the following purposes:-

Cars, vans and lorries for the sole purpose of loading and unloading goods in designated bays, this includes shoppers delivering or collecting goods.

Parking by people with disabilities holding a blue/orange badge in designated bays.

Access is unrestricted after 6pm. Only vans and lorries over 3 tonnes are allowed over the River Bridge.

The design principles of the £600,000 scheme have been to include for wider footpaths, designated loading/disabled bays and single carriageway with passing bay in Bridge Street.

Improved lighting and better CCTV. has provided enhanced security.

A rising bollard will allow access in the future for buses between The Broadway and Market Hill. Bus stops will be installed to provide better access for shoppers.

Works to surface the unmade passageways at Cow and Hare Passage and George’s Yard are now complete. This has provided a much safer route from the Globe Street Car Park to the shopping area.
