Rats

Signs of Rats

  • Rat Droppings - approx. the size of a baked bean
10 mm spindle shaped, usually round corners.
  • Unusual Smells - a longstanding problem can create a stale smell.
  •  Holes - which appear in the garden, approx. 7-12 cm in size with a pile of earth near the entrance.
  •  Rat Runs - a continuous depression in grass or other low vegetation, a smooth pathway may be visible on bare earth.
  •  Gnawing - often to the bottom of wooden doors and sheds.
  • Scattering - of compost being dragged out of bins or heaps.

Prevention

  • Piles of rubbish and food scraps provide the ideal environment for rats to live. Keep areas clear of rubbish and put food waste in bins. Rats will scavenge through bags to get at food scraps.
  • Keep food, including pet food in sealed plastic containers.
  • Holes surrounding pipes should be sealed.
  • Air bricks and ventilation holes should be covered with mesh with holes no larger than 6mm in diameter.
