There are two main types of flies which cause problems to householders, the blue bottle (or blow fly) and the house fly.
Common houseflies can be 6-8mm long with a striped grey body. Blue bottle flies are larger than the common house fly and they have a shiny blue body dusted with white on the abdomen.
House fly eggs can be laid on any vegetable or animal matter providing it is not too dry and can hatch in 8 hours to 3 days. The larva (maggot) is white and legless turning to a waxy ivory yellow in colour.
Blue bottles lay creamy white eggs on the flesh of dead animals and can hatch in 18-48 hours. The small larvae (maggots) feed on the flesh of the animal.
Due to their feeding habits, flies may carry diseases on their bodies and transmit these to the surfaces on which they land.
Prevention and Treatment
Good hygiene practices, such as not leaving food uncovered and disposing of waste properly can help prevent attracting flies into the home.
Insecticide treatments are available for use in the home (e.g. sprays). Our treatment will use a 24 hour knock down spray, with a residual insecticide if there are maggots. For treatment costs, please use the link on the right to access the Fees and Charges page.
