Ants
Ant

(Lasius Niger)

Life-Cycle

Ants build up a nest in spring.  When it becomes its maximum size the nest erupts with flying ants attempting to fly, mate and create a new nest. The actual swarms only persist for 2-3 hours. They will normally swarm at a window as they are heading towards a light source. Under favourable conditions a nest may last for several years.

Common black ants are 3-5 mm in length and blackish-brown in colour. The Pharaoh ant is a very small species 1.5-2 mm long and yellow-brown in colour occasionally with a brown abdomen. These need to be treated by a private contractor as we do not offer this service.

Foraging ants may enter houses in search of food. A good way to locate the nest can be to follow foraging ants back to their nest.

Treatment

We do not spray gardens!  Treatment can be done in a house or a barrier spray put round the outside.  Any ant powder you have already put down will need to be vacuumed up before we treat.

A self-help treatment can be done by putting bait stations near nests (this will encourage them to feed  near the nest) bearing in mind the safety of children and pets.
