Rabbits
Rabbits are often considered by gardeners to be pests, as they will eat almost any garden plant. Signs of rabbits include:
- Droppings – spherical pellets 7-10mm in diameter, often found in latrine mounds
- Scrapes - small excavations, usually with one or two droppings among the excavated soil.
- Runs - pathways where the repeated passage of rabbits has suppressed the vegetation.
- Fur either caught on fencing or thorns or torn out during fighting.
We do not offer a Pest Control service for rabbits, consult the Yellow Pages or similar for companies who offer rabbit clearance services.
Squirrels
Although not normally considered as pests, squirrels are notorious chewers and can sometimes be found making their homes in lofts. We do not offer a Pest Control service for squirrels, please consult the Yellow Pages or similar for companies who offer squirrel clearance services. You can access more information about how to prevent squirrels and what to do if you find a sick or injured squirrel by clicking on the link on the right.
Birds
Trapped birds will head for a source of light – a window, open grate in a fireplace or opened loft hatch. The Council does not carry out proofing work, remove trapped birds or carry out pest control for birds.
If you should have birds nesting in your property, young should be allowed to leave the nest and then access points should be proofed. For information on birds, please see the link to the RSPB on the right.
Moles
Moles are rarely seen above ground, preferring to stick to their underground tunnels. Moles don’t eat plant roots, their diet is made up of worms and other similar creatures, although in their tunnelling they can uproot plants. We do not offer a Pest Control service for moles, please consult the Yellow Pages or similar for companies who offer mole clearance services. Mole deterrents can be bought from garden centres or an external contractor may be able to help.
