The three 'Giddings' form a line one mile from one another, on the north side of the Alconbury Brook. Little Gidding at the centre is not now even the size of a hamlet, yet it retains its little 17th Century church arranged as a collegiate chapel with early 18th Century stalls. The building is a survival from a former religious community founded by Nicholas Ferrar, a 17th Century lord of the manor. Ferrar House has been refurbished and contains an exhibition depicting the history of Little Gidding. The house also offers retreat facilities for short stays.
Steeple Gidding, the most southerly of the three communities, also has an interesting medieval church whilst to the north, and largest of all, is Great Gidding where both church and 18th Century Baptist chapel command interest. There is a sports field and village hall which serve the needs of all three communities. A former windmill which is now a private house was never used as such because according to folklore it was too windy! The Giddings also has a useful website – www.thegiddings.org.uk which can be viewed via the link on the right.
