Somersham

In the east of the District where fenland and orchards met, Somersham was once the home of the Bishops of Ely, though very little remains of their former palace.  The Church, however, is a very impressive early English building.  The village has grown residentially in recent years and there is considerable light industry.  Outdoor amenities include a bowling green, tennis courts, squash court, football, cricket and recreation grounds and the Victory Hall, an amenity much used by all sections of community.  The village retains a small but thriving shopping centre and of the four pubs, two are situated at the main crossroads, The Rose and Crown and The George, with the Black Bull on the High Street and on the outskirts of the village is The Windmill.
